Furniture Placement Tips for Smaller Rooms
By Ironwood Home ·

Small rooms punish clutter and reward intention. The good news: a few placement principles do most of the work.
Float, do not hug
Pushing every piece against the walls actually makes a room feel smaller. Pull the sofa a few inches off the wall and let a slim console or a lamp breathe behind it.
Choose legs you can see under
Sofas and chairs raised on visible legs let light travel under them, which reads as floor space. Skirted and fully boxed pieces anchor larger rooms better than small ones.
One large piece beats four small ones
A single properly sized sofa looks calmer than a loveseat plus scattered chairs. Fewer, better pieces reduce visual noise - the real enemy in a compact room.
Work the verticals
Tall bookcases, full-height curtains hung near the ceiling, and mirrors placed opposite windows all pull the eye upward and outward.
Let furniture multitask
Storage ottomans, drop-leaf tables, and nesting side tables earn their footprint twice. In a small space, every piece should have at least one extra talent.
