How to Care for Wood Furniture
By Ironwood Home ·

Well-made wood furniture is built to outlive trends - if it is treated kindly. The habits below cover most of what matters.
Dust gently, and often
A soft, slightly damp cloth followed by a dry one is safer than dry-dusting, which can drag fine grit across the finish. Skip silicone sprays; they build up over time.
Mind sunlight and heat
Direct sun fades and dries finishes unevenly. Keep wood pieces out of prolonged direct light where possible, and away from heat vents and radiators, which can cause cracking over seasons.
Control moisture swings
Wood moves with humidity. Use coasters and trivets, wipe spills promptly, and avoid leaving damp items on surfaces. In very dry seasons, a room humidifier helps solid wood stay stable.
Lift, never drag
Dragging stresses joints and legs. Lift pieces when moving them - with help for anything heavy - and clear the path first.
Check the maker's guidance
Finishes differ, and so does their care. When a piece comes with care instructions, they outrank any general advice - including this article. If you are unsure how a specific finish should be treated, ask before applying any product.
