How to Create a Comfortable Living Room

Comfort in a living room is rarely about one perfect piece. It is the sum of small decisions that make people stay longer than they planned.

Seat people well, and near each other

Arrange seating so no one is more than about eight feet from the person they are talking to, and give every seat a surface within reach. Comfort is partly logistics.

Layer the light

One ceiling fixture cannot make a room feel warm. Combine a floor lamp for the reading chair, table lamps at seated eye level, and dimmers where you can. Evening rooms should glow, not glare.

Add texture you can feel

A wool throw, a linen pillow, a rug soft underfoot - texture is comfort you experience before you sit down. Mix at least three materials in your soft layer.

Leave breathing room

Crowded rooms feel busy, not cozy. If a piece is not earning its place, the room is usually better without it.

Finish with what is yours

Books, art, and objects with history are what turn a well-furnished room into your room. Furniture sets the stage; your life furnishes it.
