How to Choose a Dining Table for Your Space
By Ironwood Home ·

A dining table has one job description and many fine print clauses. Four decisions cover almost everything.
1. Count the seats honestly
Plan for the number of people who eat at the table on a normal Tuesday, then decide how often you truly host more. Allow roughly 24 inches of table edge per seated person for comfortable elbow room.
2. Respect the clearance
Leave about 36 inches between the table edge and the nearest wall or furniture so chairs can pull out and people can pass. In tighter rooms, a bench on one side tucks fully under the table and buys back floor space.
3. Choose the shape for the room
Rectangles suit long rooms and larger groups. Round tables soften square rooms and make conversation easier at small gatherings. Ovals split the difference; pedestal bases free up legroom at the corners.
4. Pick the material for your life
Solid wood ages gracefully and can be refinished. Veneers offer stability and value. Stone and glass have striking presence but ask for more care. Match the surface to how the table gets used - homework, projects, and hot dishes included.
